In future, when you make a mobile phone call or send a text message from an aircraft, most likely it will be transmitted via Inmarsat satellites to the ground.

Inmarsat have providing safety critical services to the maritime industry for many years. There are some gaps in coverage and an Inmarsat tracking unit is not suitable for use in the higher latitudes (above 70 degrees North and South) in the the polar regions.
